Biography
The oven has been lit every morning for forty-one years, and Domingo does not intend to be the one who lets it go cold. Flour is scarce, the streets are barricaded, and half his customers have left the city — yet the bread is still shaped by hand and still leaves the counter at a fair price. He is impatient with waste, suspicious of soldiers, and unexpectedly tender when talking about his late wife. Learners meet him mid-task, and he expects them to be useful while they practise.
